Spanish · CEFR Band 1 (A1) · Chapter 1

¡Hola! Hello!

Your first words in Spanish — and the few sounds an English speaker must learn. Spanish reads almost exactly as it is written: five pure vowels, always the same. Only a handful of letters surprise you: ñ, ll, j (the jota), the rolled rr, and the peninsular c/z. We start with greetings by time of day (buenos días, buenas tardes, buenas noches) and the everyday sí / no / vale.

Buenos días — Good morning

  1. Carlos ¡Hola! Buenos días. Hi! Good morning.
  2. Lucía Buenos días, Carlos. Good morning, Carlos.
  3. Carlos ¿Buenas tardes? Good afternoon? (is it afternoon already?)
  4. Lucía No. Buenos días. ¡Adiós! No. Good morning. Bye!

Buenas noches — Good night

  1. Lucía Buenas noches, Carlos. Good night, Carlos.
  2. Carlos Buenas noches. ¿Adiós? Good night. Bye?
  3. Lucía Sí. ¡Adiós! Yes. Bye!
  4. Carlos ¡Vale! Adiós. Okay! Bye.
