Hanzi — writing & recognition
yòu again; also; both (chapter anchor in 又…又…) Writing
zhēn real; really (Level 1 revisit; chapter intensifier) Writing
cuò wrong; mistaken (pair with 对) Writing
Phono-semantic compound: 钅 (metal) radical + 昔 (xī, phonetic). Original sense: "metals interlocking / cross-grained" → "out of alignment / wrong". Modern: "wrong / mistaken". Pair with 对 (right) for the basic evaluation axis. Note the idiom 不错 (ch6) = "pretty good / not bad" — not literally "not wrong", but a softer positive evaluation. Common confusion for learners.
duì right; correct (pair with 错) Writing
对 originally meant "to face / respond to". Extended to "correct / agree" — paired with 错 as the basic evaluation axis. The character also has prepositional use (对…来说 = "for [someone]") which appears in higher levels; this chapter teaches only the "right / correct" evaluation use.
duō many; how (Level 1 revisit; in 多么) Recognition
me particle (Level 1 revisit; in 多么 / 怎么 / 什么) Recognition
shí ten (Level 1 revisit; in 十分) Recognition
fēn minute; part (Level 1 revisit; in 十分) Recognition

tǐng quite; pretty (colloquial degree) Recognition

qì air; gas; manner (in 客气 / 没关系 — ch13) Recognition
Grammar
又…又… — "both X and Y" 又…又… — listing two compatible features in parallel
"又 X 又 Y"把两个并行的特点放一起, 表示一个东西同时有两个特点——X 和 Y. 注意: (1) 两个 又 之间通常是形容词或动词短语, 不是名词. (2) 两个特点必须 兼容(都是好事或都是坏事), 不能矛盾. "又便宜又好吃"= compatible (both positives). "又冷又热"听起来奇怪——两个相反的特点不能并行. (3) 用于评价 / 描述, 不用于动作的进行.
又 X 又 Y puts two parallel features together: "both X and Y simultaneously". Two slot rules: (1) X and Y are usually adjectives or verb phrases, not nouns. (2) The two features must be COMPATIBLE — both positive or both negative; not opposites. 又便宜又好吃 ("cheap and tasty") works — both are positives. 又冷又热 ("cold and hot") sounds wrong — opposites can't parallel. (3) Used for description / evaluation, not for ongoing actions.
- 这家店又便宜又好吃. Zhè jiā diàn yòu piányi yòu hǎochī. This place is cheap AND tasty.
- 那本书又新又干净. Nà běn shū yòu xīn yòu gānjìng. That book is both new and clean.
- 北京又大又有很多老地方. Běijīng yòu dà yòu yǒu hěn duō lǎo dìfang. Beijing is both big and has lots of old places.
Grammar
Four degree adverbs that all mean "very / extremely" before an adjective, but with very different registers. (1) 多么 — exclamation "how X!" / "so X!"; emotional / expressive. (2) 十分 — formal / written-leaning; literally "ten parts" → "fully". (3) 特别 — works in both speech and writing; literally "particularly". (4) 挺 — heavily colloquial; "挺 X 的" is one of the most common conversational degree-frames. Pick by context: chatting with friends → 挺, writing an essay → 十分, expressing personal feelings → 特别 or 多么. Watch out: pairing 十分 with informal sentence-final particles (啊 / 嘛) sounds unnatural — register mismatch.
- 多么漂亮! Duōme piàoliang! How beautiful!
- 这家店特别好. Zhè jiā diàn tèbié hǎo. This place is particularly good.
- 挺不错的! Tǐng búcuò de! Pretty good!
- 十分干净. Shífēn gānjìng. Extremely clean. (formal)
