喂, 我是 X. (接电话, 介绍自己) — 像 "hello, this is X". (打电话, 确认对方) — "hello, is that X?".

喂 is the standard Mandarin phone greeting (calling AND answering). NOT a general hello — only for phones / shouting to someone. Patterns: 喂? (rising tone, "hello?") on the caller side. (caller confirming the recipient). NOTES: (1) Shouting to a friend in public also uses 喂! — but it's NOT a casual greeting (would feel rude in person). (2) When answering, lead with 喂 rather than 是的.

Wèi? Nǐ zài nǎr? Hello? Where are you?
Wèi, wǒ shì Huáng Ān. Shì Xiè Píng ma? Hello, this is Huang An. Is that Xie Ping?
Wǒ xiànzài zài gōngsī. Yíhuìr gěi nǐ dǎ diànhuà. I'm at the company now. I'll call you back later.
Wǒ gāng jiē dào nǐ de duǎnxìn. I just got your text.

Phone-call opening intonation — 喂?

WeChat is everything in Chinese life

WeChat isn't just a talk app. In China, it's the operating system of daily life. You make calls on WeChat, pay with WeChat, talk to colleagues on WeChat, see your friends' news on WeChat. From morning to night, your phone is always on WeChat.

Paying with WeChat

When buying things in China, you don't need cash. Everyone uses WeChat Pay. Shops, buses, taxis — all accept it. Most people don't carry wallets anymore — the phone IS the wallet.

Work uses WeChat too

Chinese companies rarely use email. Colleagues message on WeChat. Your manager assigns tasks via WeChat. Friends invite you out on WeChat. Work WeChat groups are everywhere.

But work WeChat has downsides. Your manager might message tasks at 9pm. They may find you on weekends too. Work and life become hard to separate.

WeChat Moments

WeChat has "Moments" (朋友圈). It's like Facebook, but only friends can see. You post news, photos, your mood for the day. Friends "like" your posts. In China, Moments is a key part of online life.

Why no email?

In the West, email is central to work. In China, email isn't important — WeChat took its place. Chinese people see WeChat as simpler and faster than email. Perhaps email feels too 'old' — WeChat is the 'new' tool of China.

In China, WeChat is where modern life begins. Without WeChat, life feels inconvenient.
