还是坐地铁吧 Let's just take the subway
Two grammar lessons: 还是…吧 ("let's just settle on X") for soft suggestion-corrections, and the contrast/addition conjunctions 但 / 但是 / 不过 / 而且. Together they round out the choice-and-decision vocabulary that ch10 set up.
Dialogue

- 高文 张天, 我们坐公共汽车还是坐地铁? Zhang Tian, are we taking the bus or the subway?
- 张天 我决定还是坐地铁吧, 比公共汽车快. I've decided we'll just take the subway — faster than the bus.
- 高文 好. 地铁站离这儿近吗? OK. Is the subway station close?
- 张天 不远. 我们走过去. Not far. Let's walk over.
- 高文 行, 出发! Sure, let's go!
Dialogue
如果不行, 那我们去别的 — If it doesn't work, then we'll go somewhere else

- 高文 如果你想吃饺子, 那我们去那家. 周雨可以吃别的. If you want dumplings, then we'll go to that place. Zhou Yu can have something else.
- 张天 不过那家不一定有别的. Though that place may not have something else.
- 高文 另外那边还有一家. 我们看看. There's another place over there too. Let's see.
Dialogue
还是去那家吧 — Let's just go to that place
- 张天 高文, 这家店或那家店, 哪家好? Gao Wen, this place or that place — which is better?
- 高文 都不错. 但是那家更近. Both are pretty good. But that one is closer.
- 张天 那这家更便宜吗? Is this one cheaper?
- 高文 不一定. 不过那家的人很多, 不太安静. Not necessarily. Though that place has lots of people, not very quiet.
- 张天 那还是去那家吧. 我们要快. Let's just go to that one then. We need to be quick.

或 originally meant "country / region" (related to 国). Modern: "or" in statements only — never in questions (that's 还是 territory). 我吃饺子或者面 = "I'll eat dumplings or noodles" (statement). 我吃饺子还是面? = "Should I eat dumplings or noodles?" (question). The split is rigid in Mandarin; English collapses both into "or".

Associative compound: 女 (woman) + 口 (mouth) — original sense "to comply / do as one is told". Modern: "as if / like" — appears in 如果 (if), 如何 (how), 比如 (for example). 如果 (this chapter) is the standard conditional. Pairs with 那 in conditional sentences: 如果 X 那 Y.

Grammar
还是…吧 — "let's just (settle on X)" 还是…吧 — softening a final decision
"还是 X 吧"是把一个备选方案确定下来的句式: 在比较了几个选项之后, 用"还是"+ 选项 + "吧"来软化选择, 听起来像"那就 X 吧"。注意: "还是"有两种用法, 不要混淆——(1) 在问句里: "A 还是 B?"= 选择疑问("A or B?"). (2) 在陈述里: "还是 X 吧"= 决定("let's settle on X"). 同一个词, 两个角色, 全靠句子是问句还是陈述区分.
还是 X 吧 is a soft suggestion-correction frame: after weighing options, you use 还是 + option + 吧 to lock in the choice — softer and friendlier than a flat "let's do X". CRITICAL: 还是 has TWO distinct uses; don't confuse them. (1) In questions: "A 还是 B?" = "A or B?" (interrogative "or"). (2) In statements: "还是 X 吧" = "let's just go with X" (settled-decision). Same word, completely different roles — context (question vs statement) tells you which.
- 还是坐地铁吧, 比公共汽车快. Háishi zuò dìtiě ba, bǐ gōnggòng qìchē kuài. Let's just take the subway — faster than the bus.
- 还是去那家吧. Háishi qù nà jiā ba. Let's just go to that place.
- 如果不行, 还是不去吧. Rúguǒ bùxíng, háishi bú qù ba. If it doesn't work, let's just not go.
Grammar
但 / 但是 / 不过 — contrast conjunctions 但 / 但是 / 不过 — contrast and "however" conjunctions
三个连词都表示"对比 / 反转", 但语气不同: (1) 但 — 书面语 / 正式. (2) 但是 — 口语化, 跟"但"基本同义, 是日常默认。(3) 不过 — 最软, 像英文的"though". 意思相近, 用法接近, 但语体差别明显. 注意: 这三个都用在陈述句里, 不要跟"还是"(疑问句"or") 混淆——"还是"是 ch11 lesson 1 学的, 表示选择.
All three conjunctions mark contrast / reversal between two clauses, but with different registers: (1) 但 — formal / written-leaning. (2) 但是 — colloquial; near-synonym of 但; the everyday default. (3) 不过 — softest; closest to English "though" or "but then again". Meanings overlap heavily; differences are register, not semantics. CRITICAL contrast: all three are statement-conjunctions. Don't mix them with 还是 (the interrogative "or" from lesson 1) — 还是 sets up a choice question, 但 / 但是 / 不过 contrast two facts.
- 我想去, 但是今天不行. Wǒ xiǎng qù, dànshì jīntiān bùxíng. I want to go, but today doesn't work.
- 那家近, 不过有点贵. Nà jiā jìn, búguò yǒu diǎn guì. That place is close, though it's a bit pricey.
- 你可以去, 但要早回来. Nǐ kěyǐ qù, dàn yào zǎo huí lái. You can go, but come back early.
- 我们坐地铁, 不过你想坐车也行. Wǒmen zuò dìtiě, búguò nǐ xiǎng zuò chē yě xíng. We're taking the subway, though if you want to take a taxi that's fine too.
