The first grammar! With "N wa N desu" you can introduce yourself. は is read "wa" — the most common reading mistake. も means "also". You also learn the や, ら, わ rows and ん.

Grammar
N は N です ( + も) N wa N desu (+ mo)
「A は B です」=「A は B だ」。は（かいて "ha"、よんで "wa"）は しゅだいを しめし、です は ていねいな コピュラで、いつも ぶんの さいごに きます。「も」は は と いれかえて「〜も」(also) の いみに なります: A も B です =「A も B だ」。にほんごは どうしが さいごに くる SOV です。
"A wa B desu" = "A is B". は (written "ha", read "wa") marks the topic; です is the polite copula, always at the end. も replaces は to mean "also": A mo B desu = "A is also B". Japanese is SOV — the verb comes last.
- わたしは ゆきです。 Watashi wa Yuki desu. I'm Yuki.
- ゆきさんは ともだちです。 Yuki-san wa tomodachi desu. Yuki is a friend.
- マイクさんも ともだちです。 Maiku-san mo tomodachi desu. Mike is also a friend. (も = also)
- わたしは がくせいです。 Watashi wa gakusei desu. I'm a student. (がくせい = student, detailed in ch4)
