ไวยากรณ์
连动句 — 一个主语连着两个动作 Verb-chain sentences — one subject, multiple verbs
中文里, 一个主语后面可以连着两个 (或更多) 动词, 表示一系列连续 / 目的 / 方式的动作. 句式: 主语 + V₁ + (O₁) + V₂ + (O₂). 例: 我去公园看月亮 ("I go to the park to see the moon" — V₁ 去 + V₂ 看). 几种主要语义: (1) 连续动作: 我回家吃饭 (I go home and eat). (2) 目的: 我去看月亮 (I go in order to see the moon — V₁ 是为了 V₂). (3) 方式: 我们坐车去 (we go by car — V₁ 坐 + V₂ 去). 关键: 不要加"和"或"再"——连动句中两个动作直接相连. *我去和看月亮 是错的. 不要加"了"在 V₁ 后, 除非动作都已完成: 我去公园看了月亮 (I went to the park and saw the moon — 了 跟 V₂).
In Mandarin, one subject can take two (or more) verbs in a row, marking sequential / purpose / means actions. Pattern: Subject + V₁ + (O₁) + V₂ + (O₂). Example: 我去公园看月亮 ('I go to the park to see the moon' — V₁ 去 + V₂ 看). Three main senses: (1) Sequential: 我回家吃饭 ('I go home and eat'). (2) Purpose: 我去看月亮 ('I go IN ORDER to see the moon' — V₁ enables V₂). (3) Means: 我们坐车去 ('we go by car' — V₁ 坐 = means, V₂ 去 = action). KEY: don't insert 和 ('and') or 再 ('again') between V₁ and V₂. *我去和看月亮 is wrong. Don't put 了 after V₁ unless both actions are completed: 我去公园看了月亮 ('I went to the park and saw the moon' — 了 attaches to V₂).
- 我们一起吃月饼看月亮. Wǒmen yìqǐ chī yuèbǐng kàn yuèliang. Let's eat mooncakes and watch the moon together.
- 白文回家庆祝节日. Bái Wén huí jiā qìngzhù jiérì. Bai Wen goes home to celebrate the festival.
- 高医生坐车去公园. Gāo yīshēng zuò chē qù gōngyuán. Dr Lin takes a car to the park.
- 马山唱歌跳舞, 高兴极了. Mǎ Shān chàng gē tiào wǔ, gāoxìng jí le. Ma Shan sings and dances — extremely happy.

农历的节日 Lunar calendar festivals
Throughout the year, Chinese people have many festivals. Unlike Western holidays (like Christmas — always Dec 25), Chinese festivals follow the lunar calendar. The exact dates shift each year, but the stories and the foods stay the same.
Spring Festival
Spring Festival is the biggest festival of the year. Lunar New Year's Day (usually late January / early February in the Western calendar). Everyone goes home, eats together, gives kids 红包 (red envelopes). Already covered in Bk1 ch15. Spring Festival isn't one day — it's about two weeks.
Lantern Festival
Fifteen days after Spring Festival, the Lantern Festival. People eat 元宵 (sweet rice-flour balls), light up colorful lanterns, and go out to admire the moon. It marks the end of the Spring Festival period.
Tomb-Sweeping
Tomb-Sweeping falls in early April. People visit family members' graves, clean them, leave flowers. It's a quieter holiday — no celebration, just remembering family who have passed. Often a day for the whole family to walk together outside.
Dragon Boat Festival
Dragon Boat Festival is in late May / early June. People eat 粽子 (sticky rice wrapped in bamboo leaves), watch dragon boat races. The story relates to an ancient poet — Qu Yuan.
Mid-Autumn — being together
Mid-Autumn is tonight — the 15th of the 8th lunar month. The night the moon is roundest. People eat mooncakes, watch the moon, call family. Mid-Autumn is about being with family.
Four seasons in a year, each festival with its own story. The day on the calendar isn't the point — being together is.
