English · CEFR Band 1 (A1) · Chapter 17

The days of the week Os dias da semana

Os dias da semana: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday (mais Saturday e Sunday). Em inglês escrevem-se sempre com MAIÚSCULA. O ponto-chave é a preposição: usa ON com os dias — I have class on Monday, on the weekend. Usa AT com as horas (at nine, at night) e IN com as partes do dia e os meses (in the morning, in July). Palavras novas: day, week, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, today, tomorrow, weekend. Canto da pronúncia: as sílabas ocultas em "Wednesday" e a terminação "-day".

at Monday or on Monday? — at Monday ou on Monday?

  1. Emma Minsu, when do you have class? Minsu, quando tens aula?
  2. Minsu I have class at Monday. Tenho aula na segunda. (deslize: com os dias usa-se "on", não "at" — diz "on Monday")
  3. Emma With days, use "on": on Monday. Com os dias usa "on": on Monday.
  4. Minsu Oh, I have class on Monday and Wednesday. Ah, tenho aula na segunda e na quarta.

The weekend — O fim de semana

  1. Jack Emma, what day is it today? Emma, que dia é hoje?
  2. Emma Today is Friday. Tomorrow is the weekend. Hoje é sexta. Amanhã é o fim de semana.
  3. Jack Great! Do you have class on Saturday? Ótimo! Tens aula no sábado?
  4. Emma No, on Saturday and Sunday I don't have class. Não, ao sábado e ao domingo não tenho aula.

The days and "on Monday" Os dias e "on Monday"

The days of the week always take a capital letter: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday. The key rule is the preposition of time. Use ON for days: I have class on Monday, I rest on the weekend. Use AT for clock times and night: at nine, at night. Use IN for parts of the day and months: in the morning, in the afternoon, in July. A common mistake is "at Monday" or "in Monday" — with days it is always ON. To ask the day: What day is it today? — Today is Wednesday.

Os dias da semana levam sempre maiúscula: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday. A regra-chave é a preposição de tempo. Usa ON com os dias: I have class on Monday, I rest on the weekend. Usa AT com as horas e night: at nine, at night. Usa IN com as partes do dia e os meses: in the morning, in the afternoon, in July. Um erro comum é "at Monday" ou "in Monday" — com os dias é sempre ON. Para perguntar o dia: What day is it today? — Today is Wednesday.

  • What day is it today? — Today is Wednesday. Que dia é hoje? — Hoje é quarta.
  • I have class on Monday and Thursday. Tenho aula na segunda e na quinta.
  • Tomorrow is Friday. The weekend! Amanhã é sexta. O fim de semana!
  • I rest on the weekend. Descanso no fim de semana.
