我想买票 I want to buy a ticket
Two grammar lessons: 或 / 或者 (statement-only "or" — pairs with ch11's 还是 for questions) and the tentative-fact 吧 used to soften an assertion into a near-question. Vocabulary centered on the ticket-buying scenario (车票 / 机票 / 一张 / 多少钱 / 介绍 / 试).

Hanzi — writing & recognition
piào ticket (chapter anchor noun) Writing
票 originally meant "an official voucher / certificate". Modern uses extend across all "ticket / certificate / vote" senses: 车票 (train ticket), 机票 (plane ticket), 票房 (box office), 投票 (vote). The character is firmly in the money / value cluster — see the radical-of-the-chapter note.
zhāng measure word for paper-like things (one / a flat sheet); surname Zhang Writing
Phono-semantic compound: 弓 (bow) radical + 长 (cháng / zhǎng, phonetic). Original sense: "to draw / open a bowstring". Modern uses: (1) measure word for flat / paper-like things — 一张纸 (a piece of paper), 一张票 (a ticket), 一张桌子 (a table). (2) Common surname (e.g. 张天 — chapter persona). The 弓 radical is rare in productive modern characters; 张 is its most-used host.
jiè between; introduce (in 介绍) Writing
介 originally meant "between two people / standing between". Extended to "introduce" — like helping two people meet by standing between them. Pairs with 绍 in 介绍 (introduce / recommend). Also appears in 介意 ("mind / take it personally") in higher levels.
shào continue; introduce (in 介绍) Writing
Phono-semantic compound: 纟 (silk thread) radical + 召 (zhào, phonetic). Original sense: "to splice / continue with cord" → "to follow / extend". Pairs with 介 in 介绍 — the modern compound dominates the character's use; 绍 standalone is rare in modern Mandarin.
cān / shēn participate (cān, in 参加 / 参观); rare reading shēn (deferred) Recognition
jiā add; participate (in 参加) Recognition
shì try Recognition
gěi / jǐ give (gěi, Level 1 revisit); supply (jǐ, deferred) Recognition
bāng help (revisit ch2; here in 帮我 / 帮 X V) Recognition
bāo wrap; bag (in 包 = bag, 钱包 = wallet, later 书包) Recognition
Grammar
或 / 或者 — statement-only "or" 或 / 或者 — alternation in statements (not in questions)
"或"和"或者"都是连词"or", 但只用于陈述句, 不用于问句. (1) "或"——书面语为主, 比较短: "饺子或面" (statement). (2) "或者"——口语和书面都常用, 是日常默认: "我吃饺子或者面" (statement). 注意: 问句"or"用 ch11 学的"还是"——"你吃饺子还是面?" (question). 中文严格区分这两个角色: 陈述用或 / 或者, 提问用还是. 英文都翻成"or", 容易混.
或 and 或者 are both alternation conjunctions ("or"), but they appear ONLY in statements — never in questions. (1) 或 — leans formal / written: 饺子或面 ("dumplings or noodles"). (2) 或者 — colloquial default; works in speech and writing: 我吃饺子或者面 ("I'll eat dumplings or noodles"). CRITICAL: question-"or" is 还是 (ch11) — 你吃饺子还是面? ("Do you want dumplings or noodles?"). Chinese strictly separates statement-or from question-or; English collapses both into "or". Don't cross-pollinate.
- 我想买车票或者机票. Wǒ xiǎng mǎi chēpiào huòzhě jīpiào. I want to buy a train ticket or a plane ticket.
- 你可以介绍一家好店, 或者帮我找一家. Nǐ kěyǐ jièshào yì jiā hǎo diàn, huòzhě bāng wǒ zhǎo yì jiā. You can recommend a good place, or help me find one.
- 一张或两张都行. Yì zhāng huò liǎng zhāng dōu xíng. One or two tickets, either works.
Grammar
「吧」 — tentative-fact questions ("…, right?") 「吧」 — softening an assertion into a near-question
到 Level 2 为止你已经学了"吧"作为"提议 / 请求"的语气词("我们走吧"= "let's go"). 本课介绍第二种用法: 把"吧"放在陈述的末尾, 让陈述听起来像"我猜是这样的, 对吧?"——一个不太确定的问. 例: "你是大卫吧?"= "You're David, right?". 是说话人有点把握但要确认的语气. 注意: 这两种"吧"用法不同, 但写出来一样, 全靠语气和上下文区分. (1) 提议性: 在祈使句末尾, 表示软建议. (2) 推测性: 在陈述末尾, 表示"对吧?".
You've known 吧 as the soft-suggestion / request particle since Level 1: 我们走吧 = "let's go". This chapter introduces a second use: append 吧 to a statement to turn it into a tentative question — "I'm guessing this is the case; right?". Example: 你是大卫吧? = "You're David, right?". The speaker has some belief but wants confirmation. CRITICAL: both uses are written the SAME character. The split is by intonation and context: (1) Suggestion-吧 — appended to imperatives, soft "let's". (2) Tentative-吧 — appended to statements, soft "right?". Listen for tone in audio; in print, the surrounding sentence tells you which.
- 你是大卫吧? Nǐ shì Dàwèi ba? You're David, right?
- 机场离这儿不远, 是吧? Jīchǎng lí zhèr bù yuǎn, shì ba? The airport's not far from here, right?
- 一张机票大概一千块吧? Yì zhāng jīpiào dàgài yì qiān kuài ba? A plane ticket's roughly a thousand kuài, right?
