Indonesian · BIPA 1 (A1) · Chapter 13

Ini apa? What's this?

Ask the name of a thing with "apa" (it stays in place): Ini apa? Itu apa? Answer: Ini jam. Use "ini" for what is near, "itu" for what is far. Don't slip "adalah" into the question — "Ini apa?", not "Ini adalah apa?". New vocabulary: jam, payung, baju, sepatu, air, pintu, jendela, komputer, uang, kertas, kunci, hp. Pronunciation corner: object words with clear vowels & "-ng".

Tanya Tanpa "adalah" — Asking Without "adalah"

  1. Mike Budi, ini adalah apa? Budi, what is this? (slip: don't put "adalah" in the question — "Ini apa?")
  2. Budi Tanpa "adalah", Mike — "Ini apa?". Without "adalah", Mike — "Ini apa?".
  3. Mike Oh, ini apa? Oh — what's this?
  4. Budi Ini jam. It's a clock.

Milik di Belakang — The Owner Comes After

  1. Sari Itu apa? What's that?
  2. Mike Itu saya hp. That's my phone. (slip: the owner comes AFTER the noun — "hp saya", not "saya hp")
  3. Sari "hp saya", Mike — bukan "saya hp". It's "hp saya", Mike — not "saya hp".
  4. Mike Oh, itu hp saya! Dan ini kunci saya. Oh, that's my phone! And this is my key.

apa + benda apa + objects

"apa" = "what" dan tetap di tempatnya (in situ) — tidak harus pindah ke depan. Tanya nama benda: "Ini apa?" (ini + apa = "this what?"), "Itu apa?".

"apa" = "what" and stays in place (in situ) — it doesn't have to move to the front. Ask the name of a thing: "Ini apa?" (ini + apa = "this what?"), "Itu apa?". Answer without "adalah": "Ini jam.", "Itu payung." Use "ini" for a near thing, "itu" for a far one (learned in ch3-4). Two key points: (1) don't slip "adalah" into the question — "Ini apa?", not "Ini adalah apa?"; (2) pick ini/itu by distance.

  • Ini apa? — Ini jam. What's this? — It's a clock.
  • Itu apa? — Itu payung. What's that? — It's an umbrella.
  • Ini komputer. This is a computer.
  • Itu jendela. That is a window.
