Spanish · CEFR Band 1 (A1) · Chapter 2

Gracias Thank you

The words that smooth every conversation: gracias and de nada, por favor, and two ways to apologise — perdón (a small bump, getting past someone) and lo siento (a more heartfelt regret). You close with hasta luego. Spanish is warm and direct with courtesy: these few words go a very long way. And we keep tuning the sounds — the c of gracias, the v of favor.

Gracias — Saying Thanks

  1. Carlos Por favor, Lucía. Please, Lucía.
  2. Lucía Sí. ¿Bien? Yes. All good?
  3. Carlos Sí, bien. ¡Gracias! Yes, good. Thank you!
  4. Lucía De nada. ¡Hasta luego! You're welcome. See you later!

Perdón y lo siento — Sorry and Excuse Me

  1. Carlos ¡Perdón, Lucía! Excuse me, Lucía!
  2. Lucía No, no. ¡Vale, bien! No, no. It's okay, fine!
