English · CEFR Band 1 (A1) · Chapter 19

At the restaurant

여기 핵심은 관사 — a, an, the — 한국어 같은 많은 언어엔 없어요. 자음 앞엔 A(a coffee), 모음 앞엔 AN(an hour), 특정하거나 이미 아는 것엔 THE(the menu, the waiter). I'd like a coffee. Can I have the menu, please? 새 단어: food, breakfast, lunch, dinner, restaurant, menu, order, waiter, coffee, tea. 발음 코너: 약한 "a/the"와 "restaurant/order"의 "r".

menu or the menu? — menu일까 the menu일까?

  1. Emma Minsu, what do you want?
  2. Minsu Can I have menu?
  3. Emma You need "the": Can I have the menu? "the"가 필요해요: Can I have the menu?
  4. Minsu Oh, can I have the menu and a coffee?

Ready to order —

  1. Waiter Good afternoon. Are you ready to order?
  2. Emma Yes. I'd like the lunch and a tea, please.
  3. Waiter Of course. Here's the menu.
  4. Emma Thank you.

Articles: a / an / the 관사: a / an / the

English almost always puts a small word — an article — before a singular countable noun. Use A before a consonant SOUND: a coffee, a menu, a waiter. Use AN before a vowel SOUND: an hour, an apple (it is about the sound, so "an hour" because the "h" is silent). Use THE when both people know which one: Can I have the menu? (the one on this table), The waiter is here. Many languages, like Korean, have no articles, so learners drop them — but in English you cannot say "I want coffee" as "I want a coffee" is the natural order. To order: I'd like a coffee, please.

A: a coffee, a menu, a waiter. AN: an hour, an apple(소리 기준이라 "h"가 묵음인 "an hour"). THE: Can I have the menu?(이 테이블의 그것), The waiter is here. 한국어 같은 많은 언어엔 관사가 없어서 학습자가 빼지만 — 영어에선 "I'd like a coffee"가 자연스러워요. I'd like a coffee, please.

  • I'd like a coffee, please.
  • Can I have the menu, please?
  • I study for an hour and then I eat lunch.
  • The waiter brings the food.
