Culture
中国家人的名字 Family titles you can't avoid
Chinese people use family titles widely — not just for actual family, but for friends, colleagues, and older strangers (哥哥, 姐姐, 弟弟, 妹妹, 叔叔, 阿姨).
Brother/sister isn't just brother/sister
In Chinese, '哥哥' isn't always your actual older brother. A male friend a few years older is also '哥'. An older female classmate is '姐'. It's friendly familiarity, not family relation.
Calling adults
For a man slightly younger than your parents, call him 叔叔 (uncle). For a woman, 阿姨 (auntie). Your friend's dad is 叔叔, your friend's mom is 阿姨. When in doubt, 叔叔 / 阿姨 works.
What is 'uncle' in English?
English "uncle" lumps many relationships together. In Chinese, they're distinct: your dad's older brother is 伯伯; your dad's younger brother is 叔叔; your mom's brothers (older or younger) are both 舅舅. Chinese keeps these relationships distinct in their names.
In China, you don't just meet 'people' — you meet 'relationships.' The titles tell you who's older, who's younger, who's family.
