Grammar
No new grammar — we combine everything through a family photo. Remember: "adalah" goes before a NOUN (Dia adalah guru), but not before an adjective (Keluarga saya besar). The owner comes after: keluarga saya. For "very", there are two options: "sangat" BEFORE the adjective (sangat besar), or "sekali" AFTER it (besar sekali) — same meaning.
- Ini keluarga saya. Ini ayah dan ibu saya. This is my family. This is my father and mother.
- Keluarga saya sangat besar. My family is very big.
- Saya cinta keluarga saya. Keluarga saya baik sekali. I love my family. My family is very good.
Culture
Keluarga besar dan gotong royong Extended family & gotong royong
Family in Indonesia stretches wide, and community help — gotong royong — is a core value. Both shape how people relate.
Big, close families
Grandparents, uncles, aunts, and cousins are part of daily life; many households are multigenerational. Family events are large and frequent.
Kin terms for non-relatives
Like the address titles, family words extend outward — an older neighbour can be called Pak/Bu or even Om/Tante (uncle/aunt). The community feels like extended family.
Gotong royong
Mutual help — neighbours pitching in for a move, a wedding, or a clean-up — is expected and valued. Being too individualistic reads as cold; joining in, even a little, builds belonging.
When unsure: accept invitations, join in communal activities when asked, and err toward warmth and inclusion rather than keeping to yourself.
