French · CEFR Band 1 (A1) · Chapter 2

Merci Thank you

The words that smooth every conversation: merci and de rien, s'il vous plaît, and two ways to apologise — pardon (a small bump) and excusez-moi (more polite, to get attention). We add ça va, the everyday all-purpose phrase. And we refine three typically French sounds: the closed é and open è, the throaty r, and the tight u (different from "ou").

Merci — Saying Thanks

  1. Lucas Merci, Camille ! Thank you, Camille!
  2. Camille De rien, Lucas. You're welcome, Lucas.
  3. Lucas S'il vous plaît... bien ? Please... all good?
  4. Camille Oui, bien ! De rien. Yes, good! You're welcome.

Pardon, ça va ? — Sorry, how are you?

  1. Lucas Excusez-moi ! Pardon. Excuse me! Sorry.
  2. Camille Ça va ! Ça va. It's fine! It's okay.
  3. Lucas Merci ! À bientôt. Thanks! See you soon.
  4. Camille À bientôt ! Au revoir. See you soon! Goodbye.
